Abstract
Purpose: Monitoring health expectancy, as well as life expectancy, is important to achieve the sustainable development goals to ensure healthy living and improve the quality of life. Among health expectancy indicators, the Health Adjusted Life Expectancy (HALE) indicator is highly likely to be useful as a major basis for health care policy decisions, but few studies in Korea have examined. Therefore, this study aimed to suggest a direction of future research by examining the research trends on the estimation of the HALE indicator over ten years.

Methods: The online academic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, RISS, and DBPIA were used to find articles published from 2011 to January 2020 by applying keywords, including ¡°health adjusted life expectancy¡± and ¡°HALE¡±. We then classified the discovered articles into international comparative studies and single national studies, and single national studies were further categorized by socio-economic and health aspects.

Results: Among 1,680 articles, 16 articles were included in the final analysis. Seven articles were international comparative studies, and five of these seven were published as part of the Global Burden of Disease Project. In addition, two were single national studies examining the HALE gap by region, while the remaining seven were studies that analyzed differences according to chronic diseases (high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, cancer, tooth loss, etc.) and health behavior (smoking).

Conclusion: HALE is an internationally used health expectancy indicator. It should be used as a basis and performance indicator for various health care policies, including chronic disease prevention and management policies, in line with international standards. It is suggested that the HALE measurement should be continuously studied according to various health and socio-economic factors.
